Alex Prager’s new Disney film, “Once a Princess, Always a Princess,” is built almost entirely in-camera. Matte painting, puppetry, animatronics, hand-painted backdrops, and scale models that were actually eight feet tall. No CG shortcuts standing in for the real thing.

For the score, we went back to “A Whole New World” and built a new arrangement and recording from the ground up. The last Disney spot we worked on called for a reimagination. This one called for something that felt handmade, the way the visuals do. Two very different assignments, same instinct behind them: match the craft of the picture with the craft of the sound.

The film follows two girls moving between a plain apartment block and the castle it becomes in their imagination. The song had to hold both. Familiar enough to carry sixty years of Disney princess history, new enough to feel like it belongs to these two kids and no one else.

Out today for World Princess Week.
